Madonna del Magnificat

Madonna del Magnificat

The Virgin is Mother and Queen. The symbols of the scenic representation take on their meaning: the Crown, ruled by angels, represents the role of supreme queen of men. The Magnificat, which Mary is writing almost guided by her son’s right hand, is the prayer that Luke attributes to her in his Gospel, to represent the supreme role of Mother of God. The first verse of the song is: “Magnificat anima mea Dominum” ( My soul magnifies the Lord.) Mother and Son are surrounded by a celestial landscape, the Child has a pomegranate in his left hand, a symbol of his sacrifice: the red grains represent the drops of the blood shed for man by the Savior.
