Tondo Doni

The painting was commissioned by the banker Angelo Doni to Michelangelo who wanted to recall the family name (Doni = Gifts) in the gesture made by the Madonna who seems to “give” the child to Joseph and to humanity. Behind the holy family, on the right, Saint John the Baptist, also a child, who symbolizes the one who acts as a bridge between humanity before Christ. One of the very few paintings (not frescoes) attributed with certainty to Michelangelo.
